(Info drawn from The Clinton Courier) Michael (l) and Austin(r) Luong, sons’ of Dr. Phu Luong, Research Hydraulics Engineer, are part of an Indoor Percussion Band at Clinton High School. The ensemble recently received a gold medal and were named Winter Guard International (WGI)Percussion Scholastic Open Class World Champions of 2014 in the World Championship 12 April in Dayton, Ohio. Austin, plays the Synth and is in the 8th grade, while Michael, 10th grade, plays the Marimba. The young musicians play with thirty-three additional students arranged by a front ensemble, battery, and a group of dancers. The group use percussion instruments to generate a specific soundtrack and concept which they convey to the audience. The award wining piece they performed was a entitled “Sincerely” which “took the viewer on an emotional journey of a letter.” Throughout the production, the contents of the letter were read aloud while the musicians played and the dancers performed. The group beat out 42 ensembles from all over the world and was said to only have originated five years ago!

Shawn Christopher Kurtz Jr., grandson of Claudette Doiron, Program Assistant in the Technical Directors Office, received the 2014 Vicksburg Post Player of the Year award for boys soccer. He served as team captain and played four seasons as defensive back line. When the team needed an offensive threat this season, the coach moved Christopher to midfield where he lead the team in scoring 13 goals; assisted in 8 more and helped Warren Central finish with a 11-8-1. His parents are Kelle Vinzant and Shawn Kurtz.
Brent Styles, son of Richard Styles of the Coastal Engineering Branch, and Renee Styles, had the highest grade point average at Warren Central Junior High School this year. He ended the school year with a 99.4 average! He will be entering the 9th grade next school year at Warren Central High. Brent's dad says that his favorite subject is math and when he’s not in the classroom, he enjoys playing tennis and soccer.
14-year-old Jacob Wiggins (right) is a Freshman at Brookhaven Academy and plays for the schools tennis team. Jacob placed 2nd in the No. 2 boys finals, helping snag the silver for the Brookhaven Cougars in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools AA State Championship tennis tournament 7 May 2014 at the Ridgeland Center . Wiggins defeated a member of the Oak Hill Academy 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round and finished out the competition with second place in the final round. Jacob plans to pursue tennis through high school. Jacob is the son of CHL Associate Technical Director Charles (Eddie) and Jennifer Wiggins.
Computer Scientist, Fulton Carson, of the Estuarine Engineering Branch is shown with the Chevy Blazers of the Hinds County Youth Softball/Baseball Association of Raymond, Mississippi. His daughter daughter Shelby (far right) pitches and plays shortstop.
Hunter Lynch, son of Gary Lynch, Research Hydraulic Engineer in the Navigation Branch of the Navigation Division, tied the knot with his lovely bride Ellie Sills at First Baptist Church of Vicksburg 7 June 2014. Ellie’s parents are Kathy, retired WES employee, and David Sills. Ellie is a Music Teacher and Hunter works at a Baptist church in Byram as a worship leader and at Chick-fil-A in Clinton. Hunter is in his final year at Mississippi College and will be attending Baptist seminary school afterwards.

Retired CHL Director, Dr. William (Bill) Martin was wed to Evelyn Jones on 8 February 2014. Evelyn is one of two social workers at River Region Hospital. She has been doing this for 35 years in various incarnations of local hospitals, starting with the Sisters of Mercy. The couple recently bought a home together.

Michael Follum, Research Civil Engineer of the Hydrologic Systems Branch, and Tara Follum were blessed with little Adelyn Elaine Follum on 21 April 2014. She was 8 lbs 5.1 ounces and 20 inches long.

Proud parents Lauren, Research Civil Engineer in the Coastal Engineering Branch, and Cooper Dunkin welcomed baby Clara Margaret Dunkin to the world on 22 January 2014. She was 6lbs 12 oz. and 20 inches long.

Graduations
Robert (Robbie) James Rosati, son of Julie Dean Rosati, of the Coastal Processes Branch, and James (Jay) Rosati, of the Coastal Engineering Branch, graduated from the University of Alabama summa cum laude with undergraduate degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering 3 May 2014. He will be attending the University of Texas in Austin studying towards a PhD in physics. Robert received an award as the Outstanding Undergraduate Engineering Student award and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. In his spare time, Robert enjoys biking, hiking, kayaking, rock-climbing, and skiing.

Mallory Little, daughter of Charlie (CHL) Research Hydraulic Engineer in River Engineering Branch and Jan (GSL) Little graduated from Mississippi State University Cum Laude on May 17, 2014 with a B.A. in English. She will continue her education at the Mississippi University for Women graduate school and will major in Speech/Language Pathology.

Faith Thomas, daughter of Marshall Thomas, civil Engineering technician of the Navigation Branch, and Joy Thomas, graduated with high honors from Vicksburg High School 22 May 2014. During High School, she was a member of Mu Alpha Theta, played slow pitch and fast pitch softball for VHS, and fast pitch softball on the Vicksburg Posts all county softball team for five years. Faith will attend Hinds Community College on a softball scholarship, and plans to major in Physical Therapy.

Clint Fuller, son of Billy Fuller Research Hydraulic Engineer of the Harbors, Entrances, and Structures Branch and Lana Fuller, graduated from Warren Central High School 23 May 2014. Clint was a member of the National Honor Society, Red Chord scholar, and graduated with high honors. He was Foundation scholarship recipient and voted Wittiest Senior. Clint will be attending Hinds Community College where he will major in Computer Science.

Hunter Lee Hasty, grandson of Claudette Doiron, of the Technical Directors Office, graduated Salutatorian of Vicksburg Community School 17 May 2014. The graduation ceremony was held at Unity Baptist Church in Georgetown, MS. For now, Hunter is working in the construction field and is presently employed by Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR) Inc., of Houston. His proud parents are Kimberly Nevels and Greg Hasty.

On May 23, 2014, Shawn Christopher Kurtz Jr., grandson of Claudette Doiron, graduated 3rd in his class with a 4.56 GPA from Warren Central High School. During his high school career, Shawn served as yearbook editor, senior class president, Mr. Warren Central, Captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, and the Vicksburg Post Player of the Year and was inducted into the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Warren Central Hall of Fame. As President of his Senior Class, he gave the welcoming speech for the graduation ceremony. Shawn plans to attend MSU where he has been accepted into the Honors College and the Early Entry Program at the College of Veterinary Medicine. His proud parents are Kelle Vinzant and Shawn Kurtz Sr.

Matthew Talbot is the oldest son of Cary Associate Technical Director in the Technical Programs Office in CHL and Angie Talbot. After four years of hard work, he achieved his goal of graduating with straight A’s and was recognized as the Valedictorian of the Vicksburg High School Class of 2014 May 22. Matthew also lettered in swimming and in the Vicksburg “Pride” Marching Band playing the trumpet. He served in student government for 3 years and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Math Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. Matthew has received many awards athletically, musically and academically, but he is most proud of his 3rd place finish at the 2014 State Science fair, attending the State Swimming Championship meet with school relay teams for 3 years, and being named the STAR student and Valedictorian of his class at Vicksburg High School. In addition to graduating from High School, this year he earned his Eagle Scout award and graduated from Seminary, an early morning scripture study class, achieving 100% attendance at the 6 a.m. scripture study class for all four years of high school. At present, he is a Pathways student employee in the Geotechnical and Structures lab, where he helps conduct research on soil erosion. Matthew plans to study Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University starting this fall.
Baylee Diana Jeter graduated with honors from Warren Central High School 23 May 2014. During high School, Baylee was a Red Core Member, sponsor in the Homecoming Court, Diamond Girl for the WC Baseball team and a 3-year member of the WC soccer team, in which she lettered during her Senior Year. She was also an active leader at her Church Redwood United Methodist Church for Vacation Bible School and helped with the Nursery. Baylee will continue her Education beginning with Hinds Community College. She started summer classes in June 2014 and will pursue a career as a Dental Hygienist. Baylee is the Daughter of Debbie Jeter, Administrative Specialist of Harbors, Entrances & Structures Branch, and Doug and has a younger brother, Carlton E Jeter who also attends WC High School.

Julie Mabry daughter of Steve and Karen Mabry, Computer Scientist in the Executive Office, graduated from St. Al with honors May 24,2014. She was voted Miss St. Al and most outstanding athlete. She played basketball, softball and was on the Flashette dance squad. She plans to attends Mississippi State University the following fall.

Emilie Elizabeth Dantin, granddaughter of Administrative Assistant in the Executive Office Sharon Hanks,and daughter of Jim and Tracey Hanks Dantin, graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge, La. 18 May 2014. Emilie received the Art 3 Award and assists with summer art camps. She also received the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) Award, which will cover her tuition at the University of Louisiana in Monroe, where she plans to major in psychology.

Benjamin Welp, son of Nanette and Timothy Welp, Research Hydraulic Engineer in the Coastal Engineering Branch, graduated 24 May 2014 from St Aloysius. He played basketball and baseball for four years. During his senior year he was selected for the 2014 Vicksburg Post Picks and the Mississippi Association of Coaches Class 1A All-State First Team in Baseball. This fall, Benjamin will attend the University of Mississippi this and major in Civil Engineering.

John Christopher Green, son of Debra (CHL) and Greg (GSL) Green, graduated with Highest Honors from Vicksburg High School on May 22, 2014. Chris was named a Mississippi Scholar and was a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club at Vicksburg High School. He was also a member of the soccer and tennis teams. Chris lettered 4 years in soccer and was team captain his junior and senior years. He received the Gator award in soccer his junior year and received most valuable offensive player his senior year. He lettered 3 years in tennis and made it to the 2nd round of the MHSAA State Tennis tournament both his junior and senior year, playing in the mixed doubles category. He received the MVP award for tennis his junior year and was team captain his junior and senior years. Chris was also named the Gator A Club Scholar Athlete of the Year and was named to the Vicksburg Post All-County Soccer Team. In addition to excelling in academics and athletics, Chris also enjoys dance and auditioned for the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance”, making it past the first round of auditions only to be cut by the judges in the second round. His future plans are to attend Itawamba Community College, on a partial ACT Scholarship, majoring in Computer Engineering and continue his education at Mississippi State or Southern Miss.
Philip Jade Pollock, son of Cheryl, Research Hydraulic Engineer of the Coastal Structures branch, and Philip Pollock, and brother of McKenzie Pollock is also a STEP student at CHL, graduated 23 May 2014 from Warren Central High School. Jade was on the football and soccer team where he lettered and was selected for several years for the All County Teams. He was also selected as Warren Central's Most Versatile Soccer Player. Jade plans to attend Itawamba Community College on Soccer and Academic scholarships, and will major in either finance or kinesiology.

Robin Cooper, daughter of Deborah Cooper, CHL River Engineering Branch Research Hydraulic Engineer, and Walter Jerome Cooper, International Paper power house operator, graduated from Hinds Community College in Raymond, 16 May 2014 with an Associate Degree in general studies. Robin attended Hinds on a soccer scholarship and was the recipient of the Vashti Underwood Muse Hinds Foundation scholarship in 2012 and 2013 both years she attended Hinds. As the starting goalkeeper for the Hinds Lady Eagles soccer team, she was named to the All State Team as a freshman and the All Star team as a sophomore. Robin was a baseball Diamond Darling and a football trainer. She has also played with a Jackson, Mississippi semi pro women’s soccer team. Robin is active in her community and has participated in missions to Mexico and New Mexico for the past 7 years. She led a soccer ministry for children in Mexico and a puppet ministry in New Mexico on a Navaho Indian reservation. Robin also loves to sing and act. Robin has been accepted into Mississippi College in Clinton, where she has accepted soccer and academic scholarships to study elementary education.
